University of Southern Denmark The Mayan Languages

Data Sources Listed by Language

The purpose of this index is to show which sources have been used for each of the 31 languages included in the database. The list is in alphabetical order by language (Acatec first, Yucatec last). For each language, the 4-letter language code used in the database is also supplied. Then comes the unique date of the source, followed by the name(s) of the author(s). The location (town or region) where the data was collected is also supplied, if known.

Where more than one location is involved for a given source and a given language (as with e.g. Chol 1907), one or the other of two devices has been adopted. Either both locations are marked (e.g. 1907 A for Alianza, 1907 T for Tila), or one is left unmarked (cp. the 1902 Chol source, where 1902 stands for Hidalgo, while 1902 E marks El Triunfo). In either case, each location is uniquely specified. If the author does not state where the data was collected, we have simply entered "where?".

If the data is known to have been collected by someone other than the author, this is specified in parentheses after the name of the location.

Where two dates appear, separated by a slash, the source specified by the second date contains a copy of, or an excerpt from, the source specified by the first date. Thus 1962/1973 refers to a 1973 copy (by Fisher) of a 1962 Mopan vocabulary (by the Ulrichs). For ease of reference, the "copyist" is cited in capitals (e.g. FISHER), while the original source is given in a standard format (e.g. Ulrich and Ulrich). Full bibliographic details for these compound sources are supplied in the main bibliography under the name which is given in capital letters.
